Foreword:
I can just about recall a time before the internet platformed everything. But since my early teens, most of what I consume has been filtered through social media. As I’ve grown, so has my frustration with these platforms.
I’ve come to see art, what once was a deeply personal and expressive act, be reduced to what is now best known as ‘content.’ The hunger for engagement is flattening creative individuality and homogenising expression. Algorithms do not celebrate who we are; they shape and suppress us into what is most digestible for the widest audience.
This photo book presents 33 individuals, captured in their own space. Ranging from studios, places of work or simply enviroments where they feels most at ease. Each portrait is not just a depiction of a person but a reflection of their offline world; the textures and nuances that define their character. Shot on large format film, these images capture each subject in their entirety: raw, unfiltered, and wholly present in the moment. The portraits take inspiration from identification cards. Images meant to define us in a controlled and impersonal way, often determining what we are entitled to, rather than revealing who we actually are.
Alongside each image a 13 Digit code is displayed, At first glance it appears as a random sequence of numbers. However, each code is uniquely determined through a survey given to the individual. The numbers reflect both the tangible elements of their individuality and the invisible logic of algorithms that govern our lives. Beneath this arbitrary sequence is a real person, yet their identity is reduced to data.
The purpose of this book is to unsettle you, as we are moving to a point of no return. The rise of AI and algorithms will only further distance us from what makes us human. Soon, we will no longer exist within the loop but will become part of the code itself in an endless machine.
